The Biggest challenge in aviation still photography is conveying motion, more importantly, speed! Aircraft, whether static or in the skies need to say these things so the romance, thrill, and speed comes across in the photograph. It’s all about knowing basic photography really. You need the right background which is either clouds or earth. You then need to be close to the subject and the subject as close to the background that is safe. Then you use a long lens with a slow shutter speed (less than 1/60) and amazing panning skills to combine this all into a sharp photo of the subject with a blurred background. The formula is that simple but the execution is not. That is where the skill of the photographer is put on display as the viewer can only see one thing in the photograph, a spectacular aircraft!
