Short Sunderland captured by D3x / 24-70f2.8
The first photograph I saw of the Short Sunderland was from WWII. There was a gun turret in the nose as it was on patrol off the English coast. It was produced with the idea of being competition for the great clipper fleet circling the globe. There weren’t many airports back in the day but plenty of water so commercial flight around the globe was done off weather. This one lives at Fantasy of Flight and when presented the possibility of pulling it out to photograph it, I jumped at the opportunity. It might appear like I’m shooting from the ground, but I was at eyelevel. To photograph it at eyelevel, we got out a twelve-foot ladder. It’s a spectacular aircraft.
